What is Freeze Dried Food
Food that is freeze dried goes through a dehydration process where all moisture is removed under low pressure with a controlled tempurature. This is a three-part process which first brings the food to a deep freeze. It then goes through a primary drying where it removes bulk moisture from the food in the form of ice. The last phase is a secondary drying where it removes any residual moisture. Unlike typical dehydration, which destroys a portion of the nutrients, food that is freeze dried retains 100% of its nutrients. This whole process is called sublimation, which transforms the ice into vapor, leaving behind a dry and lightweight product. The absence of moisture is what prevents bacteria from being able to form and, when packaged correctly, produces food with a shelf life of up to 25 years. We use heavy duty 7 Mil mylar bags and Harvest Right oxygen absorbers, and all bags are double or triple heat sealed for added protection.
Why Use Freeze Dried Food
We've been freeze drying food for years, and the more we do it, the more uses we find for it. Here's a few of our favorites:
- Home Pantry: Make it a staple in your home pantry to facilitate quick and healthy meals. Need to get the kids to their sporting event? Leaving for an early morning meeting? Having shelf stable meat, cheese, vegetables and fruit on hand allows you to quickly and easily throw together a healthy meal, saving you valuable time in the kitchen. And with the incredible shelf life, no more worrying if ingredients are still good or not.
- Eliminate Food Waste: Did you know the average American family wastes over $2,000 per year in food that spoils before it can be eaten? How many times have you thrown out half a container of sour cream or pasta sauce? Eliminate food waste by only rehydrating what you need for that meal.
- Traveling: Take it with you on vacation to not only lighten the load, as freeze dried food generally weighs 20% or less of it's original weight, but also to minimize bulky cooler space.
- Boating: Freeze dried food allows you to have the kind of meal you would enjoy from home, without the need to take up precious space in your boat's refridgerator or cooler.
- Hiking, Camping & Day Trips: Want to make fresh eggs on your camping stove? Leave the mess and broken eggs in your cooler behind by taking our organic whole egg powder with you instead. Simply add water, and cook as you normally would. Add some freeze dried ground beef and vegetables to it and you have yourself a hearty breakfast to fuel your day.
- Emergency Preparedness: Easily store meat, cheese, eggs, vegetables and fruit for those unfortunate situations which may leave you without power or the ability to go to the store. Freeze dried food is good for 25 years, so you can stock up without fear of it going bad before you need it. With rare exception (e.g., eggs) all of our freeze dried food is fully cooked and ready to eat, which makes it an even wiser choice for emergency situations.
- Economic Investment: Food isn't like the stock market. The price of food doesn't go up and down. It only goes up. Investing in things like meat and cheese now could save you thousands down the road.
Consider the Source
Whenever possible, we source food from local farmers and merchants here in Wisconsin, which includes any beef product on our site. There's a lot of unhealthy food out there, so when selecting food to freeze dry, our approach is simple - if we wouldn't serve it on our table, then we won't serve it on yours. Quality is important to Storehouse, and you'll see that reflected in the products we offer.
What Sets Storehouse Foods Above the Rest
What sets us above the rest is our offering of locally sourced foods and organic offerings whenever possible, and our ability to offer custom orders to give you exactly what you're looking for, right down to a specific brand and flavor. Because there are so few companies producing freeze dried food, the market price gets driven up to reflect that monopoly. Freeze dried food is time consuming and expensive to make, but you'll find our prices are extremely competitive. In fact, if you find the same product for less, contact us and we'll see what we can do.
Storehouse Foods is located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. If you choose local pickup when checking out, you will not be charged for shipping, and we will reach out to you to schedule a pick up date and time that works for you.

*Note: Items that do NOT freeze dry well are fat/oil, nuts, peanut butter, chocolate, and alcohol. Although those items do not freeze dry well on their own, they do fine when mixed in with other things. If you're not sure if something can be freeze dried, just ask and we'll let you know.
